Work has started on a £4.6million investment by the new owners of the Swan hotel in the Lake District to transform the iconic 17th century coaching inn into a luxury spa hotel.

Oldham-based construction and fit-out company, Medlock FRB, is building 28 new bedrooms, a boutique break-out eatery, and a luxury treatment spa at BH Group’s, newly acquired, Swan hotel in Newby Bridge, close to the southern end of Windermere.

The refurbishment is due to be completed by next autumn, 2021. The state-of-the-art treatment spa will boast some stunning design features including a rasul thermal mud bath, a hydrotherapy pool, steam room, sauna, two external spa units, and treatment rooms. The new hydrotherapy swimming pool will be housed both indoor and outdoor on the ground floor.

Medlock FRB will also be creating a grand, open-plan entrance to the much-loved landmark hotel and adding further car parking spaces to the car park, which is adjacent to the hotel’s marina on the river Leven.

Medlock FRB Director, Dan Lewis, said: “The Swan hotel is one of the oldest, most iconic hotels in the Lake District, and this rich heritage is at the heart of the new bedroom and spa extension.  We are helping to create a superb new facility that cherishes the hotel’s well-loved character and will further improve the building for future generations to enjoy.”

James Houlston from BH Group, the owners of The Swan, said: “We are delighted to be working with Medlock on a really exciting project, which will provide a major boost to the local area in term of employment and tourism. With Medlock’s skills as one of the leading contractors in the North West, we hope to deliver what will be one of the leading spa resorts in the North West.”
