Strip out of a former casino at the Printworks in Manchester and conversion into a 12-lane ten-pin bowling venue on the ground floor.

This project took us to one of Manchester’s most recognisable locales: Printworks. Originally built in 1873 as a newspaper printing house, Printworks is one of Manchester’s premier leisure destinations, bringing fun, energy, and a bustling atmosphere to the city centre.

The project team’s first task was to strip out the former cinema’s fixtures and fittings, from the basement to the roof. This included all M&E services, lift pit, and partitions. We used a crane lift to remove and replace the roof plant and oversaw the coordination and installation of the new building services.

Then we set about bringing the state-of-the-art bowling and social entertainment hub to life in Manchester’s Printworks. This included the creation of a new mezzanine level to house the lively entertainment area filled that includes a bar, American pool, beer pong, shuffleboard, and some classic arcade games. In keeping with its surrounding area, this new venue is modern, fresh, and exciting. Full of bright neon signs, colourful decor, and an industrial-like atmosphere.

In March, the COVID-19 pandemic happened, halting progress for 11 weeks. The entire team took the disruption in their stride. When we could eventually return to the site, we needed to move the project forward safely under COVID-19-compliant site procedures and conditions, adding another layer of complexity to the project. Health and safety is always taken incredibly seriously and this was no exception.

This was a fantastic project to be a part of and the Medlock team is proud to have overcome all challenges to bring this lively venue to life for client Ten Entertainment.
